On December 9, 2024, the governments of Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, India, Mongolia, Pakistan, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago launched a six--year, $45 million initiative led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to reshape the supply chains of the fashion and construction industries. The effort, aided by an additional $295 million from other sources, aims to reform regenerative design, the replacement of non-renewable materials, resource-efficient production, responsible purchasing behavior, and improved post-use collection.
The goal of the initiative is to prevent the release of 6 million ton of greenhouse gas emissions and 18,750 tons of chemicals into the environment. Organic air pollutants will be minimized to protect air quality, and 825,000 hectares of land will be restored to revitalize natural habitats. By 2031, it is estimated that 2 million people worldwide will benefit from the efforts.
